Where Little Readers Begin: A New Library Adventure in Madison

At Hickory Hill Academy, we know that some of the best childhood memories begin with a story. Books open doors to imagination, build curiosity, and lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. For our youngest learners in preschool and pre-kindergarten here in Madison, we’ve created a special space where that love for stories can grow—the brand-new Pre-Kindergarten Library.

A Cozy Corner for Young Readers

This inviting corner of our campus feels like stepping into a storybook. Our pre-kindergarten students visit weekly to check out books for their classrooms, and children of all ages—including babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners—are welcome to drop in with their families to enjoy a quiet moment together. It’s a place where little ones can curl up with a book, share a story with a teacher, or simply let their imaginations take flight.

The Story Behind “Teddy Bear’s Picnic”

Every classroom at Hickory Hill Academy is named after a classic children’s book—hand-picked by our founder, Mrs. Sandy Dahl, who wanted stories to be at the heart of our community. Our new library carries this theme forward in a cheerful space called “Teddy Bear’s Picnic.”

During their first visit, Mrs. Sandy shared a memory of listening to the Teddy Bear’s Picnic  song as a child. The students read the book, sang along to the song, and even practiced pointing to each word in the title—an early literacy skill that helps children connect words on a page with spoken language. These small, joyful experiences are what spark a lifelong interest in reading.

More Than Just Books on a Shelf

The pre-kindergarten library is filled with opportunities for children to explore and learn in different ways, including:

  • Book collections for age and interest, from picture books to stories that build empathy and imagination.

  • Author spotlights, giving children a chance to see the faces and voices behind their favorite stories.

  • Writing and play stations, where young learners can invent their own characters and tales.

  • Audio books of the week, blending listening and literacy skills.

  • Weekly activities that keep reading exciting and fresh.

Why Early Literacy Matters for Madison Families

For children in Preschool and Pre-kindergarten, books are more than entertainment—they’re building blocks. Reading aloud, exploring illustrations, and even singing story-inspired songs all help develop vocabulary, attention skills, and a sense of connection with the world around them.
