Play-Based Preschool in Madison, WI: Building Confidence at Hickory Hill Academy

As we wrap up our January theme, “Let’s Go! Adventures in Motion,” we’re celebrating more than trucks and trains at Hickory Hill Academy. We’re celebrating agency.

Here in Madison, WI, winter can sometime keep us indoors a bit more this time of year. But inside our classrooms, there has been no shortage of movement, imagination, or adventure.

In a child’s world, adults are big and children are small. They go where we take them. They follow the schedule. They buckle into the car seat.

But in play? They take the wheel.

They decide whether the rocket ship is headed to Mars or making a quick stop at the grocery store. They control how fast the train moves across the tracks. They choose where to set up camp and who sleeps in the tent.

This kind of dramatic play is not random. It’s meaningful, hands-on learning.

At our private preschool through 8th grade school in Madison, we believe play builds more than imagination. It builds confidence. When children step into leadership roles in their play, they practice problem-solving, collaboration, and independence. They begin to believe, quietly and confidently, “I can get myself from here to there.”

It has been a joy to watch your children explore everywhere from the depths of the ocean to outer space — all while safely anchored in the comfort of our classrooms.

Where We Went This Month

We may not have left our campus, but the cognitive mileage we covered was impressive!

  • Outer Space & Airplanes - We looked up and imagined big. Students became astronauts and pilots, wondering what it takes to travel far from home and what tools help us navigate the skies.

  • Camping & Exploration - We pitched tents, roasted pretend marshmallows, and talked about shelter. In these moments, children practiced the social skills that help them “live together” — sharing space, negotiating roles, and caring for one another.

  • Cars, Trains & Transportation - Our classrooms transformed into busy cities. We built ramps and roads, experimented with speed and gravity, and learned how transportation connects communities.

  • Maps & Navigation - We discovered that simple lines on paper can represent our big, wide world. Directional words like left, right, near, and far began to carry real meaning.

  • Boats & Water - At the sensory tables, we tested what sinks and what floats. We strengthened fine motor skills while captaining ships across imaginary oceans. Anchors away!

At Hickory Hill Academy, a family-centered private school in Madison, WI, we care deeply about giving children both structure and freedom — guidance from teachers and room to explore their own ideas.

From our youngest preschoolers to our middle school students, we see how powerful it is when children are trusted to think, lead, and create.

This month wasn’t just about movement. It was about empowerment.

If you’re a Madison-area family looking for a school where children are known, supported, and encouraged to take ownership of their learning, we would love to welcome you to visit Hickory Hill Academy and see our classrooms in action at our next Open House, February 18th!

Because here, children don’t just move through the world. They learn how to navigate it with confidence and compassion!
