Celebrating Student Achievements in Academics and Beyond

A Week of Curiosity, Courage, and Community

Brr! It’s cold today! As winter settles in and the temperatures drop, it’s the perfect moment to slow down, grab a warm drink, and reflect on the moments that make our school community shine. This week and last were full of moments that beautifully reflected the curiosity, courage, and sense of community that make our school so special. From a journey through the stars to a school-wide celebration of words, our students had opportunities to learn, lead, and cheer one another on—reminding us that some of the most meaningful learning happens when we come together.

From the Classroom to the Cosmos

Last Wednesday, our 1st and 5th graders took learning beyond the classroom with a much-loved trip to the Planetarium. This experience is especially meaningful because of our buddy program, which pairs younger students with older mentors for shared discovery and connection. Watching these buddies learn side by side was a powerful reminder of how impactful cross-grade relationships can be.

Inside the planetarium’s immersive 360-degree theater, students explored the solar system, tracked planetary orbits, learned about moon phases, and discovered fascinating facts about planets like Mars and Jupiter. Concepts they’ve been studying—such as Earth’s tilt and the changing seasons—came to life in a way that sparked genuine excitement and curiosity.

The buddy system played a key role in the day’s success. Fifth graders confidently stepped into leadership roles, answering questions and helping explain big ideas, while first graders felt encouraged and supported. These shared moments not only strengthened academic understanding, but also built confidence, connection, and a growing love of learning for students at both grade levels.

Spelling, Spirit, and School Pride

At the same time, excitement was building back on campus as students in grades 3 through 8 prepared for the All-School Spelling Bee. Classroom bees filled the halls with focused practice, determination, and plenty of encouragement. Students studied challenging word lists, practiced pronunciation, and explored word origins—all while supporting their classmates along the way.

Classroom winners advanced to the final round held yesterday, where the All-School Spelling Bee brought together students, staff, and cheering peers. Watching students confidently spell words like astronomy, celestial, and perseverance showcased not only their academic skills, but also their poise under pressure and willingness to take on a challenge.

What stood out most was the supportive atmosphere. Every participant was celebrated, and the encouragement from the audience made it clear that this event was about much more than winning—it was about effort, growth, and courage.

Growing Together as a Community

Both the Planetarium trip and the Spelling Bee remind us that learning happens in many ways. Whether students are mentoring younger classmates, stepping up to spell a tough word, or simply cheering one another on, they are developing skills that go far beyond academics.

These experiences reflect the dedication of our students, teachers, and families working together to create a community where curiosity is encouraged, effort is celebrated, and everyone belongs. We are proud of our students and grateful for moments like these that bring learning—and our community—to life.

“Watching our older students guide our younger ones at the Planetarium, and seeing the courage of our Spelling Bee participants, confirms what a vibrant, supportive community we have here. Thank you for your continued support of our students’ academic journeys.”— Lauren Costello, Head of Lower and Middle School
