Why People Are Talking About Our Head of School, Evan Hunt.

If you have been to Hickory Hill Academy, you know the beauty of the campus is breathtaking. Every season brings a new scenery that breeds curiosity, creativity, and inspiration to the HHA community.

While the campus always brings an exciting feel to our school, there's something else that has caught the attention of our students and families. They know him as Mr. Evan. Meet our Head of School, Evan Hunt.

Mr. Evan has spent twenty years teaching and working in schools in the United States, Latin America, and Asia. He most recently was the Headmaster at Valor Preparatory Academy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Previously he was Head of School at two international/bilingual schools in Beijing, China. Prior to moving to Asia he served as Head of School in Guatemala. To read more of his bio, please click HERE.

While his bio is impressive, what has caught the hearts of HHA students and families is his presence.

He's out in the parking lot every morning and afternoon greeting families and being that first friendly face when the children come into school. If anyone needs a helping hand, it's Mr. Evan who is rolling up his sleeves and asking, "How can I help?"

It doesn't matter what the job is for Mr. Evan. From being in the dunk tank multiple hours for our summer camp carnival, to being the emcee at our Harry Hustle run, to shoveling snow, to then checking in with the HHA teachers and families - Mr. Evan selflessly leads in a joyful manner. As he walks back to his office or when he finishes an email, he ends it with, "Make it a GREAT day!"

"I think you will find I am the type of administrator and head that wants to talk to parents at carpool and to meet with a student after school who might be struggling to “fit in” or trying to decide on what excites them both inside and outside the classroom. I also make time for teachers as they are the backbone of the school. I know that in order to accomplish anything I must build and maintain strong and trusting relationships. I consider myself a teacher first and will always appreciate the demands that are placed on them every day. I want to inspire and be inspired by everyone that makes the HHA experience possible. As the Head of School, I look forward to sharing my passion, knowledge and experience with others, while being surrounded by amazing children and adults. I know at HHA I will find families, teachers, and students who appreciate and understand that an education is so much more than a percentage on a report card. In this unique and warm environment, I want us to share a love for learning and discovery, because we know students learn best when they can drive their own instruction and exploration of their world." - Evan Hunt

  • "Mom! I see Mr. Evan! Can you roll down the car window, I want to say hi to him! Hi Mr. Evan!" - HHA Early Childhood Student

  • "Mr. Evan is really wonderful. He knows a lot about our school." - HHA Lower School Student

  • "I'm really thankful for Mr. Evan's leadership at HHA this year. My husband and I can tell that his presence at the school has such a positive impact. There was a day not too long ago that I needed help, and Mr. Evan was not only the first to see that I needed some help, he also fixed the problem in 90 seconds flat. I was so impressed and thankful. I said to myself, I guess this is the community we have at HHA - very present and so helpful. It truly is a community." - HHA ECE Parent

  • "Evan is always so responsive to my questions. Whether I ask if we can talk in person to email, he always has a positive, quick response. I can tell he is involved at school, and that he truly cares about each person at HHA." - HHA Lower and Middle School Parent

"At HHA learning takes place in an environment filled with like-minded people who encourage and inspire one another to dig deeper and take risks- even if we do not always have the “right” answer. We do not want to build a school of students who never make mistakes. We want a school where making a mistake is encouraged and celebrated as an opportunity to build something new, grow inside, and inspire self and others to make the world a better place. This will be made possible by working closely with our Leadership Team to further develop and deepen the academic and enrichment (extra-curricular) experience for students. As parents your input will play a vital role in our ability to reach our goal to continue to be the very best educational option for families in the Madison area. This includes, but is not limited to welcoming new faces to our community and embarking on establishing a first-class middle school program. This is a truly exciting time to be a Highlander!" - Mr. Evan

It's different here at HHA. Our heart is to have a fun, safe environment for your children to discover new things, learn about the world around them, and have an absolute blast doing it! Our faculty strives to keep the parent-teacher-student relationship as a top priority. Mr. Evan models that day in and day out, and our parents feel it.
