Leading with Heart: The Selfless Leadership of HHA's Head of School and Early Childhood Director

Updated: Feb 6, 2023

In the world of today that is so often driven by self-interest and ambition, selfless leadership can be a rare gem to find. At Hickory Hill Academy, however, our Head of School (for grades Kindergarten through Eighth grade) and Early Childhood Director (Infant through Pre-Kindergarten/ 4K) serve as shining examples of what it means to be selfless leaders.

At the heart of their leadership is a deep empathy and concern for others. Whether it is students, teachers, or staff, our Head of School, Evan Hunt, and Early Childhood Director, Teresa Hoveland, are always willing to listen, understand, and support. They are always ready to put the needs of others before their own, even if it means sacrificing their own comfort or convenience.

Some practical examples from last Friday...

With this wintery Wisconsin weather keeping outdoor play limited, our Infant/Toddler class took their adventurous spirit to new heights and climbed the stairs for indoor activities!

When they made their way up to the office areas, Miss Teresa stopped what she was doing to come say hello. Instead of going back to her many projects, she welcomed the class into her office for a time to play and learn. Her kind and genuine spirit was felt by these little ones, and they came right up to her to interact and learn!

If you remember the weather last Friday, it was quite chilly! Serving alongside the teachers, Evan Hunt braved the cold and helped direct traffic and welcome families as they picked up their children at the end of the school day. This isn't something that he does every once in awhile. He does this every day. HHA families are his priority, and he makes the effort to establish relationships with each one!

One of the ways in which they model selfless leadership is through leading by example. Whether it's participating in school events or lending a helping hand, they are always present and involved, showing their commitment to the school community. This level of engagement and dedication inspires others to follow their lead and become selfless leaders themselves.

Another hallmark of their leadership style is their willingness to admit their mistakes and seek help when needed. They are not afraid to ask for help and recognize the importance of working together as a team to achieve a common goal. They understand that success is not just about individual achievement, but also about creating a positive and supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

We are so thankful that both Evan and Teresa are passionate about developing the next generation of leaders! They invest their time and energy into mentoring and coaching others, sharing their knowledge and experience to help others grow and succeed. This type of leadership is invaluable, as it helps to create a culture of continuous improvement and growth, where everyone is encouraged to reach their full potential.

The selfless leadership demonstrated by our Head of School and Early Childhood Director at Hickory Hill Academy serves as a shining example of what it means to be a true leader. Their empathy, commitment, and willingness to serve others is a testament to the positive impact that one person can have on a community. By modeling this type of leadership, they are helping to create a better future for everyone at Hickory Hill Academy.
